Expat Services Expat Services SH 2021-10-12

Shanghai is overflowing with things to do. Your challenge will be to prioritize the city's attractions and accomplish all of your goals in the limited time you have here.

Expat Services have chosen for you 10 places that you shouldn't miss during your trip here.

1. Yu Yuan Garden

Yu Garden has been a Shanghai fixture since the 16th century when a Ming Dynasty official wanted to create a soothing garden for his parents to spend their senior years. Today, it is one of the most famous classical gardens in China.

Address:

218 Anren St, Huangpu, Shanghai

Metro Station:

Yuyuan garden, Line 10, Exit 1

2. The Bund

Best known by its Anglo-Indian name of Bund (Wàitān), the Zhongshan Lu is a lovely broad promenade running along the west bank of the Huangpu River. It's particularly popular among tourists as the area has retained a European feel (it was once the location of the city's International Settlement) that is particularly noticeable in the many old English and French buildings now serving as restaurants, boutique stores, galleries, and offices.

Address:

Zhongshan Road, Huangpu, Shanghai

Metro Station:

East Nanjing Road, Line 2/10

3. The Jing'an Temple

Jing’an Temple is a great value because of its unique location against a background of busy shopping malls and skyscrapers in the center of the city. Meandering through the temple's three main halls, one of which has an impressive Buddha statue, you're overcome with the wafting aroma of incense. Visitors can light a bundle for a few yuan, and throw small change into many of the temple’s lesser shrines and statues.

Adresse:

170 Anyuan Road, Jing'an, Shanghai

Entrance Fee:

50CNY (Free on the 1st and 15th days of each lunar month except the first)

Metro Station:

Jing'an Temple, Line 2, Exit 1

4. Oriental Pearl Tower

The Oriental Pearl Tower is a Shanghai landmark as it towers over the Huangpu River in Pudong New Area. At 468 meters (1,535 feet) tall, it was the highest building in Shanghai when it was built in the early 1990s. Eleven spheres are strung vertically through the tower, a scene that is suggestive of dragons playing with pearls. The glass floor of the outdoor viewing platform is probably one of the most thrilling attractions in Shanghai.

Address:

1 Century Avenue, Lujiazui,

New Pudong District, Shanghai

Entrance fee:

Combo ticket: 190 - 230 CNY

Metro Station:

Lujiazui, Line 2, Exit 1

5. Zhujiajiao

Anyone visiting Shanghai must visit at least one water town to make their time there complete. Zhujiajiao, located in a Shanghai suburb, is one of the best-preserved water towns in the area, despite being 1,700 years old.

Address:

Meizhou Road, Zhujiajiao Town,

Qingpu District, Shanghai

Metro Station:

Zhujiajiao, Line 17

6. Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road is the main shopping street of Shanghai and is one of the world's busiest shopping streets. Today's Nanjing Road comprises two sections, East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road.

Metro Station:

West Nanjing Road, Line 2/10

7. Tianzifang

Tianzifang is a tourist shopping and cafe area in Shanghai in the Old French Quarter. Unlike the better known Xintiandi area nearby, the area retains an “organic and original” feel because the area hasn’t been markedly reconstructed in recent years. Instead, you’ll see buildings, alleys and streets of the old French Quarter with later Chinese additions piled on.

Address:

210弄 Taikang Road, Dapuqiao, Huangpu District

Metro Station:

Dapuqiao, Line 9, Exit 4

8. Nan Xiang Xiao Long (南翔小笼)

As you know, the specialties in Shanghai are Bao and Dumpling. This restaurant, a bit eccentric, will be the pleasure of your taste.

Easy to access and affordable, this is where you have to taste real Chinese cuisine.

Address:

210 Guyiyuan Road, Jiading Qu, Shanghai

Metro Station:

Nanxiang, Line 11, Exit 1

9. Xintiandi

Xintiandi (Chinese: 新天地; pinyin: Xīntiāndì) is an affluent car-free shopping, eating and entertainment district of Shanghai. The district is composed of an area of reconstituted traditional mid-19th-century shikumen ("stone gate") houses on narrow alleys, some adjoining houses which now serve as book stores, cafes and restaurants, and shopping malls. Xintiandi has also an active nightlife on weekdays as well as weekends, though romantic settings are more common than loud music and dance places.

Address:

Lane 181, Taicang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai

Metro station:

Xintiandi, Line 10/13, Exit 1

South Huangpi Road, Line 1, Exit 2

10. Century Park

Century Park is the largest park in the city of Shanghai. It is situated on Jinxiu Road, in the New Pudong Aera of Shanghai, nearby to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. It's the perfect place during the summer to enjoy the sun and relax on the grass.

Address:

Jinxiu Road, New Pudong Aera, Shanghai

Metro station:

Century Park, Line 2, Exit 1/4
